Controversial Sculpture Draws Praise and Criticism – Article

I was alerted to this article  from the Highlands Today Publication about my most recent installation in Sebring, Florida.  It seems the male figure makes some people a bit uncomfortable.  I have dealt with this kind of criticism for the whole of my career doing public sculpture.  There was a much publicized reaction to one of my male torsos in Albany, NY a few years ago which garnered me some great attention and exposure.  It was even referred to as “The phallus that both offended and inspired…”  . What I love about this most recent article is that I was mentioned in the company of the God of Art, Michelangelo, arguably the most important and famous artist ever!  While I am not sure I live up to his amazing reputation I am excited that my work has changed the way people move through that park.  Now that it is being written about and talked about as ‘controversial’ or ‘troubling’ more people will go see it and it will prove that public sculpture is an important and beneficial addition to communities because it brings people together to discuss issues, whatever they may be.  If only one person shifts their gaze away from their everyday routine to glance at my work, then I have succeeded.

Read the article, leave comments with your thoughts and see for yourself in the image below if this sculpture is ‘troubling’.
