Long Island City Arts Open is this weekend. Please come on out to Long Island City and see me in action as I open my studio for the weekend.

LICAO 2012 OPEN STUDIO WEEKEND CATALOG

I will be out there all weekend working and showing people around my workspace.

I will show you the processes I use in the construction of my work and some of my newest and in progress sculptures.

The address of my studio is:

43-50 11th Street, Long Island City NY 11101 space 200G

Directions: Take the E train to 23rd Street – Ely Ave (first stop in Queens) Exit the back of the train and walk down to 11th street, make a right and walk two and a half blocks.

I am between 44th Ave and 43 Rd.

Winged Glory Installed in Suwanee Georgia

Winged Glory, galvanized and powder coated steel, 88″ x 101″ x 62″, 2009-2012 has been installed in Suwanee Georgia! The show is open for a year and this piece joins an old favorite WallWalker, powder coated steel, 120″ x 84″ x 103″, 2007 which was most recently in Ithaca NY and Greenport LI!

This is a small new kinetic body-part-collage piece I recently finished. I have been playing with kinetic balancing sculpture since 1996 and love the simple center of gravity principle to hold these pieces onto the balancing rods. There is no welded connection between the body parts and the post other than gravity. The sculpture is placed on the post and spins, anyone could come lift it off or spin it too hard and it would fall off.

Welcome to steelstatue.com, the website for sculptor Jack Howard-Potter. With this update you will find a collection of photographs highlighting sculptures created in 2011. These works are smaller in scale than many of his previous works, but retain the wonderful balance of movement and solid anatomy that is inherent in all of Jack’s work. With this work, Jack has also started to finish pieces as he has envisioned in his mind’s eye for years – with chrome plating. In 2011, Jack chose to focus on smaller works in this exploration of the human form, due to the technical challenges of chrome plating steel. These small pieces will serve as stepping stones to fully realizing larger works finished in chrome in the future.

Here is my latest work in progress. This is the ‘skeleton stage’ where I perfect the pose, proportions, base and overall look of the piece before I fill in the musculature with steel. Enjoy!
